Basant Kumar Birla is the son of Ghanshyam Das Birla,[1] the father of the late Aditya Birla, grandfather of Kumar Mangalam Birla, brother of Krishna Kumar Birla and Chairman of BK Birla Group, Krishnarpan Charity Trust, BK Birla Institute of Engineering & Technology, Pilani ( BKBIET ) and various educational trusts and institutes.

Birla, the youngest son of the late Ghanshyam Das Birla was born on 4 February 1921. He had married in April 1942 to Sarala, daughter of Brijlal Biyani.[2] They had one son – Aditya Vikram Birla who expired in 1995 and two daughters, Jayashree Mohta and Manjushree Khaitan. At the age of 15, he was actively associated with a large number of Companies & became the Chairman of Kesoram Industries. He concentrated on the industries of cotton, viscose, polyester and nylon yarns, refractory, paper, shipping, tyrecord, transparent paper, spun pipe, cement, tea, coffee, cardamom, chemicals, plywood, M.D.F. Board etc. & Indo Ethiopian Textiles Share Company was established by him which was the first major joint venture by any Indian Industrialist in globe & the Emperor of Ethiopia Haile Sellassie awarded him, the medal of the Mainelik II’, the highest Ethiopian Award. He is the Chairman of Krishnarpan Charity Trust which runs an Engineering College in Rajasthan & of Swargashram Trust, Rishikesh which runs a Sanskrit school. He is the author of several books. His book Svantah Sukhaya is an autobiography.
He has made notable contributions through his social and institutional activities and takes an active part in their working. He is associated as Governor or Trustee or otherwise by establishing the following Institutions:
